New Music and Improv: Ken Aldcroft Convergence Emsemble, Imps

Composer/guitarist/improviser Ken Aldcroft has become an integral part of the national creative music scene while performing his original creative music projects throughout Canada at festivals, concert halls, clubs and schools during the past decade. In this time Ken has released eight recordings as a leader, the most recent being The Ken Aldcroft Convergence Ensemble “The Great Divide” released in October 2006.

Along with leading the Convergence Ensemble Ken co-leads Hat and Beard a Thelonious Monk duo project with drummer Dave Clark and the trio Aldcroft / Shaw / Sorbara who have recently released their debut CD “Remnants”. Ken is also a member of Dave Clark’s “Woodchopper’s Association”, Joe Sorbara’s Sextet “Other Foot First” and “Pickle Juice Orchestra”. Other projects include ongoing collaborations with writer Kris Elgstrand and dancer Julie Lebel as well as creating soundtracks, composed and improvised, to various film and video projects.

Imps is currently Victoria’s most notable collective improvisation group that feature a unbiqutus blend of eastern european melodies, free jazz sensibilities, and vocal improv. The band recently played to a packed house at the Media Club in Vancouver, opening for the legendary, No Neck Blues Band.
