Deep Within the Colourful Recesses of Our Minds Nicholas Zirk
"Deep Within The Bright And Colourful Recess Of Our Minds is a ‘movable’ mural stretching 7’ high, running the length of the gallery wall. The painting will be made on Tyvek plastic, pinned with tacks, and will be a combinatorial mixed media piece, using acrylic, acrylic latex, oils and spray paint, but will also include UV reactive prints, framed photos, pasted found images, and cut out absences. The plasticity of the support will be figured into the presentation of the piece, incorporating folds and flaws the same way we experience our memories. Since I am working with limited space in my studio, as the work is being made it becomes an exquisite corpse I play with myself, an act of memory and remembering, which inherently creates disjointed narratives within the work as a whole.
Nicholas Zirk (b. 1986 Vancouver, CA) currently lives and works in Toronto. His practice uses humor and memory to create grander narratives examining reality as a construct. These stories are mostly told through collage-like paintings, but also through installations, photographs, and video. Zirk often collaborates with Laura Hudspith.
