Valor a Tu Grito - Courage to Your Cry Valora Tu Grito - Value Your Cry
In Mariachi music, a grito is a spontaneous shout, yell, or cry of emotion, whether it be of joy, anguish, nostalgia, or pride, it is a bold expression of feeling. The act of giving such a yell requires you to commit fully in order for it to emerge fully. I am intrigued by the feeling of trepidation that can arise when you're about to share your voice, the discomfort that that can bring about and how it affects the sound that arises. I’m also fascinated by how this expression of emotions can create a sense of belonging and comfort. This work is a reflection on the discomfort and comfort felt in expressions of emotion around cultural and personal belonging and acceptance, based on my understanding and experiences as part of the Mexican diaspora, situated in the local West Coast environment.
Satya Underhill Garcia is an interdisciplinary artist primarily working in video, drawing, and painting. She
often uses video projections to create immersive installations. Satya’s mother is from central Mexico and her
father is the 4th generation in his family of European settlers to live on Pender Island, the traditional territory
of the WSANEC Peoples, where Satya also grew up. Through her art practice Satya explores ideas around change, transformation, cultural identity, and the relationships between these themes which converge as a reflection on cultural evolution. Changes in cultural understanding experienced by diaspora is often a focal point in her work. She has been researching aspects of her own cultural heritage, as well as how cultural identity plays a role in society more broadly.
